Este artigo reconstitui a origem e o desenvolvimento dos "Testes ABC", dispositivo destinado à verificação da maturidade necessária à aprendizagem da leitura e escrita, e considerado capítulo essencial da obra psicológica de Manoel Bergström Lourenço Filho.

This essay presents the origin and development of the "ABC Tests", device destined to verify the necessary maturity for learning the processes of reading and writing, considered to be an essential chapter of the psychological work of Manoel Bergström Lourenço Filho.

Redeeming the memory of the pioneers: **Laerte Ramos de Carvalho(* 03/09/1922 - 07/08/1972)**

Escrever sobre a vida do Prof. Laerte Ramos de Carvalho não é tarefa fácil. Qualquer tentativa de descrevê-la sempre será pobre diante da expressividade de sua produção em diferentes setores, apesar do pouco tempo de que dispôs (faleceu antes de completar 50 anos). Precocemente demonstrou o seu talento, o que não passou despercebido por importantes personagens tais como o Prof. João Cruz Costa, Dr. Roldão Lopes de Barros e Julio Mesquita Filho entre outros. Filosofia, Educação e a imprensa à sua disposição, abriram-lhe importante espaço para expor suas idéias. A lucidez com que discutia os problemas da educação brasileira provocava profundos debates em favor da escola pública. O rigor científico nas suas pesquisas permitiu que ele refutasse, com brilhantismo, obras de respeitáveis estudiosos da Filosofia. Além de professor, ensaísta, editorialista destacou-se também na direção de instituições de ensino de prestígio. Uma vida assim tão rica precisa ser preservada, pois, na afirmação de Garcia Marques, a vida não acaba com a morte e sim com o esquecimento. Sua presença educativa em todas as atividades que exerceu merece tentativas, mesmo modestas, de relatar os seus feitos. Esta Academia sabiamente o distinguiu com a outorga do título de Patrono da Cadeira nº 8 pelos significativos serviços prestados à educação, incluindo nesse escopo a formação de discípulos, hoje diversas personalidades da ciência psicológica.

It is by no means an easy task to write about the life of Prof. Laerte Ramos de Carvalho. Whatever attemp to describe it will always sound poor before the expressivity of his production in different sectors, and taking on account his short lifetime (he passed before completing 50 years). He demonstrated his talent precociously, and this was perceived by important personalities such as Prof. João Cruz Costa, Dr. Roldão Lopes de Barros and Julio de Mesquita Filho, among others. Philosophy, Education and with the press at his disposition, many important doors were opened to enable him to explicit his ideas. His lucidity when discussing the Brazilian educational problems provoked serious debates in favor of the public school. His rigorous scientific researches allowed him to refute, brilliantly, works by respectable masters of Philosophy. Besides being a professor, essayist, editorialist, he was also an eminence in the direction of prestigious learning institutions. Such a rich life must be preserved as, according to Garcia Marques, life doesn’t end with death, but does, yes, by oblivion. His educative presence in all the activities in which he took part deserves an attempt, even though modest, to relate his undertakings. This Academy very wisely has distinguished him with the title of Patron of Chair #8 due to his significant services on behalf of education, including in this scope the formation of disciples, who are nowadays great personalities in psychological sciences.

Redeeming the memory of the pioneers: **Antônio Miguel Leão Bruno (* 21/07/1903 - 13/09/1997)**

Esta biografia pretende ressaltar os principais fatos da vida e da obra do Prof. Dr. Antonio Miguel Leão Bruno, Patrono da Cadeira nº 39 deste sodalício, destacando sua importância nos primeiros tempos da Psicologia no Brasil. Médico, da décima primeira turma da Faculdade de Medicina e Cirurgia de São Paulo e advogado pela Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de São Paulo, o Dr. Leão Bruno buscou, em seus estudos, a interdisciplinaridade, tão bem retratada em sua extensa produção científica, e pioneiro nos estudos sobre o teste de Rorschach. Não se pode cair no esquecimento quem tanto contribuiu para o estudo, a promoção e o crescimento da Psicologia como ciência e profissão no Brasil, em especial para o desenvolvimento da técnica em referência.

This biography intends to emphasize the main aspects of the life and works of Professor and Doctor Antonio Miguel Leão Bruno, patron of Chair #39 of this fellowship, highlighting his importance in the first steps of psychology in Brazil. As a doctor, belonging to the eleventh group of students that were graduated in medicine by the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of São Paulo, and a lawyer by the Law Faculty of Sao Francisco Square, Dr. Leão Bruno searched, in his studies, the connection between Psychology and Medicine which was very well portrayed in his extensive scientific production, and as a pioneer in the studies about the Rorschach test in Brazil. He can not be forgotten as he gave a great contribution to the study and promotion of the growth of psychology as a science and profession in Brazil, especially for the development of the Rorschach diagnostic..

Family's awareness of the adolescents' profound hearing loss acquired

O objetivo deste trabalho é o de avaliar a percepção que o adolescente com perda auditiva adquirida, em nível profundo, tem de sua família. São estudados 10 deles, na fase pré-cirúrgica, de ambos os sexos, com idade de 13 a 18 anos e que são atendidos pelo Programa de Implante Coclear do Centro de Pesquisas Audiológicas (CPA) do HRAC/USP/Bauru. Utilizam-se, como instrumentos de coleta e interpretação dos dados, o Desenho de Família com Estórias (DF-E) de Trinca e o Questionário do Adolescente R-4 de Oliveira. Tem-se o enfoque sistêmico como base teórica. Conclui-se que a percepção referida é caracterizada por duas formas: de satisfação, quando o adolescente percebe que a família organiza-se para atendê-lo e de insatisfação quando sente que aquela detém conflitos, mostrando-se incapaz de atender às suas solicitações. No primeiro caso, incluem-se a maioria dos jovens estudados.

The objective of this work is to evaluate the awareness that an adolescent with acquired hearing loss, at deep level, has of his family. Ten of them were studied in the presurgery stage, both male and female with ages ranging from 13 to 18, and who are being attended by the Program of Cochlear Implanttion of the Center of Hearing Researches (CTA) of the HRAC/USP/Bauru. Trinca’s method of Family Drawing with Stories (DF-E) and Oliveira’s R-4 Adolescent Questionnaire are employed as instruments for the collection and interpretation of data. The systemic focus is used as a theoretical basis. The conclusion is that the mentioned perception is characterized by two forms: of satisfaction, when the adolescent realizes that the family members organize themslves in order to help him; and dissatisfaction, when he feels that they are in conflict, incapable of attending his needs. The majority of the youngsters studied are included in the first case.

Phenomenological structural approach and case studies

O método fenômeno-estrutural tem suas origens em Eugène Minkowski e dirigese à análise dos dados imediatos da consciência, temporalidade vivida e do dinamismo do contato com a realidade. Françoise Minkowska inicia a análise da linguagem no método de Rorschach em casos com epilepsia e esquizofrenia. Zéna Helman ampliou tal análise a outras avaliações psicológicas e quadros psicopatológicos. Apresenta-se breve histórico dos fundamentos daquele método e uma análise do psicodiagnóstico de um caso com transtorno de personalidade borderline. Aplica-se o método de Rorschach, o Teste de Apercepção Temática TAT e a Escala de Inteligência Wechsler WAIS-III. O Rorschach revela o predomínio da estrutura sensorial de personalidade, elementos de oposição e contradição, qualidades mórbidas, desvitalização da percepção humana e dificuldade em perceber aspectos da realidade. O TAT indica preocupação e medo do outro, tom melancólico, tristeza, solidão e sentimentos do vazio. O WAIS III mostra melhor desempenho na área de execução e quociente de inteligência na média superior. A análise fenômeno-estrutural contribui para a compreensão da linguagem e da expressão tal qual se manifesta nessas provas, revelando como a paciente pode sentir e expressar os problemas que a afetam em suas características perceptivas, imaginativas e cognitivas.

The phenomenological structural method originated by Eugène Minkowski, applies for the analysis of the immediate data of conscience and experienced temporality by human suffering. Françoise Minkowska approached the essential mechanisms of language through Rorschach method examination and Zéna Helman extended such analysis to other evaluations. A brief historical background on the principles of this method and a case of borderline personality disorder are presented. The Rorschach method, Thematic Apperception Test and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale are applied. The Rorschach shows the predominance of the sensorial structure of personality, elements of opposition and contradiction, morbid and decomposing qualities, unvitality of human perception and difficulties in perceiving aspects of reality. The TAT indicates concern and fear of the presence of other people, melancholic tone with lack of vitality, sadness, solitude and feeling of emptiness. The WAIS-III shows a better performance in the motor area and Intelligence Quotient at high average. The phenomenological structural analysis contributes to the study of cases by enhancing the understanding of language and expression as revealed by these tests, showing how the patients may feel and transcribe problems which affect them in their perceptive, imaginative and cognitive characteristics.

Understanding and consideration of teachers regarding learning styles

O estilo de aprender compreende a maneira peculiar que cada indivíduo emprega para adquirir experiências e conhecimentos. Envolve, portanto, um processo psicoeducacional que necessita ser avaliado para garantir sucesso na aprendizagem. Tendo em vista tal propósito, estuda-se, na presente pesquisa, a percepção de 11 professores acerca do estilo de aprender de seus alunos. A esses, procedentes do ensino fundamental, médio e superior é aplicado um questionário semi-estruturado com a finalidade de obter-se informações sobre o estilo de aprender de seus alunos. Os resultados mostram que poucos são os docentes estudados que conseguem identificar esse construto, embora afirmem utilizá-lo na prática pedagógica.

The style of learning comprehends the peculiar manner that each individual uses to attain experiences and knowledge. Therefore, this envolves a psychoeducational process which must be evaluated so as to guarantee a successful learning. With this proposition in mind, this research studies the perception of 11 teachers abou the the learning style of their pupils. A semi-structures questionnaire is pplied to these pupils who come from the basic, medium and superior schooling degrees, with the purpose of obtaining information on the learning style of their pupils. Results demonstrate that not many of the teachers examined manage to identify this construct, although they state that they use it in the pedagocic practice.

Abstinence and the reduction of damages in the recovery process of dependents on psychoactive substances

O artigo analisa dois procedimentos na recuperação dos dependentes de substâncias psicoativas: os períodos de abstinência e a redução de danos, entendida esta como dependência moderada não prejudicando a vida normal. Os trabalhos disponíveis não chegam a resultados conclusivos, sendo também escassos na comunidade científica. A presente contribuição tem por finalidade auxiliar no esclarecimento sobre o valor desses procedimentos. Estudam-se os dados obtidos do Livro de Matrícula e dos prontuários de 43 recuperandos internos de uma instituição em prol da prevenção e da recuperação desses dependentes. Os resultados mostram expressiva freqüência na abstinência no programa de mútua ajuda, como follow-up após tratamento, e menor incidência na prática da redução de danos. São eles surpreendentes, no primeiro caso, e esperançosos no segundo, uma vez que este último é considerado como estratégia para alcançar abstinência estabilizada. A metodologia utilizada tanto no tratamento quanto no período de follow-up é tida como fator de grande influência nesses resultados.

This essay analyses two procedures in the recovery of dependents on psychoactive substances: the abstinence periods and the reduction of damages, thus understood as moderate dependency with no harm to normal life. The materials available do not reach conclusive results, which are also scarce in the scientific community. The present contribution intends to assist in clarifying on the value of these procedures. Data obtained from the enrollment book and from the records of 43 interns under treatment of an institution of prevention and recuperation of these dependents are being studied. Results show an expressive frequency in abstinence in the program of mutual help, as a follow-up after the treatment, and a lower incidence in the the practice of the reduction of damages. They are surprising, in the first case, and very hopeful, in the second, once the latter is considered as a strategy to reach a stable abstinence. The methodology utilized not only in the treatment, but also in the follow-up period, is understood as a factor of great influence in these results.

Educational Psychology on contemporaneity

O trabalho baseia-se em reflexões de caráter epistemológico que admitem a existência de uma crise das ciências na contemporaneidade, a qual se reflete na área Psicologia Educacional. Um olhar retrospectivo sobre os últimos 25 anos de Psicologia no Brasil leva ao reconhecimento da crítica radical que denunciou a psicologia educacional a serviço de interesses hegemônicos. Nos anos mais recentes, parece emergir um novo modo de conhecimento científico que ilumina novas práticas, mais apropriadas às necessidades sociais. Consolida-se a formação e atuação de psicólogos da educação, mais preparados na teoria e na prática para contribuir para a solução dos problemas da educação no Brasil..

This work is based on reflections of an epistemological character that admit the existence of a crisis of sciences in the contemporaneity, which reflects on the area of the Psychology of Education. A retrospective view over the last 25 years of Psychology in Brazil leads us to the recognition of the radical criticism that denounced the educational psychology as serving hegemonic interests. In the most recent years, there seems to emerge a new way of scientific knowledge that enlightens new practices, more appropriate to the social necessities. The development and performance of educational psychologists are consolidated, in order to be better prepared in theory and practice so as to contribute to the solution of the problems in Brazilian education.

Hospital toy libraries, an analysis focused on quality criteria

Este estudo realiza o levantamento e análise por controle de qualidade das brinquedotecas hospitalares, públicas e particulares, identificadas nas unidades de saúde de um município da Grande São Paulo, com base na Carta de Qualidade das Brinquedotecas Francesas, adotada pela Associação Brasileira de Brinquedotecas. Esta verificação responde a uma exigência legal, em nível nacional, que obriga os hospitais que atendem crianças em regime de internação, a instalarem-nas. Os resultados constatam a existência de 19 Unidades de Saúde com internação pediátrica, sendo sete públicas e 12 particulares, das quais apenas duas possuem brinquedotecas, uma em unidade pública e outra, em particular. Os dados obtidos em ambas por meio do questionário auto-avaliativo respondido pelos responsáveis, seguido de entrevista semidirigida com eles, indicam aspectos positivos nos itens relativos aos serviços oferecidos por elas e à acolhida da clientela, inclusive das famílias, porém aspectos insatisfatórios em relação ao planejamento e funcionamento, à definição clara de seus fins e meios, à formação profissional da equipe e à obtenção de parcerias para seu suporte financeiro. A pesquisa aponta a grande necessidade de implantação dessas unidades, bem planejadas e operacionalizadas.

This paper tracks and makes a quality analysis of the hospital toy libraries, both private and public, found in the health-care units. The analysis is conducted based on the French Toy Libraries Quality Chart, which is the document used by the Brazilian Toy Library Association. The verification in this study attends to legal demands on a national level, which oblige the hospitals with paediatric admittance units to host a toy library. This study verifies that out of 19 Health-Care Units with paediatric admittance, 7 public and 12 private, only two house toy libraries; one public and one private. Data obtained in both toy libraries by means of an auto-evaluative questionnaire filled by the people in charge, followed by semi-directed interview, indicates positive aspects regarding the services offered by the toy library and the clients’ response, including the families, but it also indicates unsatisfactory aspects pertaining to: the organization prior to the toy library’s setting up, the clear definition of the toy library’s objectives and means, the professional qualification of the staff and also to the formation of partnerships for financial and material support. This research points out the great need for the setting up of wellplanned and operational toy libraries.
