One of the approaches used to study the motivational construct is the selfdetermination theory, which distinguishes different motivational types: demotivation, extrinsic motivation, and intrinsic motivation. This study aimed at identifying the motivations for Physical Education undergraduates to participate in a theoretical training on swimming tutoring focused on people with physical disabilities as well as their motivation for later acting as tutors of those athletes. This is a qualitative study conducted through semi-structured interviews. Took part in this analysis twenty students from the Physical Education course split into two groups according to their participation: theoretical training (CP) or theoretical training and acting as tutors (CTP). After the analysis of the following categories and subcategories were established: extrinsic motivation (goals and future gains due to external factors linked to reward and punishment) and demotivation (feelings and perceptions). In conclusion, the main factors that motivated students were linked to extrinsic motivation.
