With the objective of understanding the way men and women ago we dose the moment of retirement of 50 women and 50 men of different social classes to ask about the significance they attributed to work during their lives. Through professional activity persons solidify projects and dreams, “make” themselves and at the same time modify their relations with others. In this way, the real world, as we know it today, is a result of mans actions. A questionaire composed of tive closed and four open questions was used. The closed ones had the objective of obtaining information with regards to sex, civil status, degree of schooling, professional level and received a quantitative treatment with results presented in tables. The open questions were aimed at understanding the significance of work and the projects to be carried out after retirement and were submitted discourse analysis procedure. The results revealed that in spite of large differences in professional occupations and social positions of each interviewed subject their incorporated senses and significances of work are matizades by senses propayated by liberalism. Personal realization always remains like a project design to be executed after retirement. And when retirement arrives a majority of the interviewed subjects feel surprise and disappointment because they do not know how to handle existence in a pleasurabel way without a professional occupation, even if its related activity was carried out with much insatisfaction. The absence of a project to be realized after retirernent leads to anxiety and isolation.
