Abstract

The surgical intervention represents a threat in the life of any person, because it involves a specific and differentiated emotional charge. The chose of this theme is due to, mainly, by the large range of feelings that the surgical procedure can awake in the life of a determined individual, in as much as the surgery is a non-expected event, which breaks the normal developing and life cycle of an individual. Following this principles, this study had as main objective, elucidate the patient’s life related to the moments before the surgery. This study was conducted due to the phenomenology investigation methodology that proposes to study and comprehend the phenomenon since the experience. Opened interviews were conducted with pre-surgical patients interned at Hospital Casa de Saúde, in Santa Maria, RS. The results show that the moments before the surgery are dramatic and frightening for the patient. The fear of the unknown is the main cause of insecurity and anxiety. Due to the patients fantasies, the more frequent are related to the anesthesia and the recovery.
