Abstract

MONTEIRO, Dalva de Andrade. [Pass]time - the metaphor existence. Cogito [online]. 2011, vol.12, pp.14-20. ISSN 1519-9479.

The relationship between human beings and time has been marked by both utilitarian and reflective aspects. The operation of the tool ponderable human construct is as elusive as the possibility of the unreachable infinite; it mobilizes questions and feelings of all categories and purposes. Whether it is a life lived in the everyday world or life reflecting the world of ideas, time is a landmark, a beacon, a reference to the existence and human construction. In the field of ideas and knowledge in History, Philosophy, Astronomy, Theology, Public Health, Psychoanalysis, and Quantum Physics among others, Chronos is the time of measurement, control, and predictable linearity and quantity. Dialectically, these fields nod to other aspects of time within time. Of these, it appears that they escape the dictatorship of utilitarianism ‘time is money,’ which subverts the order of control, that extends beyond the single dimension, which breaks with the immediacy of the here and now and consumerism. These other ways to delineate time must be qualified, rather than quantified. From these provocations, it may be possible to think that existence is more than just the passage of time.

Keywords : time; psychoanalysis; quality of life; consumerism; depression; immediacy.
