Abstract

BORGES, Livia de Oliveira  and  ARGOLO, João Carlos Tenório. Adaptation and validation of a psychological well-being scale for use in the occupational studies. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2002, vol.1, n.1, pp.17-27. ISSN 1677-0471.

The present study was aimed to adapt and to assess the factor structure of the GHQ-12 - General Health Questionnaire. This questionnaire measures small amounts of deterioration in mental health through behavioral indexes and it is used broadly in occupational studies. This study was developed with samples of bank workers (N=152), health professionals (N=136) and unemployed (N=158) in Natal, Brazil. The results corroborated previous studies, showing that the one-factor solution represents the best solution but it also showed the validity of using the two factors solution. Significant differences of the mental deterioration level for situation and for occupational category were found. The results showed that the questionnaire has sound psychometric properties and that its use in occupational studies may be generalized for the local context.

Keywords : Psychological well-being; Factor Analysis; General Health Questionnaire.
