Abstract

LABATE, Renata Curi  and  BARROS, Gisele Curi de. A possibility of listening to a family in mourning: giving a new meaning to the experience of loss. Rev. SPAGESP [online]. 2006, vol.7, n.1, pp.50-57. ISSN 1677-2970.

The Brazilian Association Against Childhood and Adult Cancer - ABRACCIA is a philanthropic entity that receives cancer patients who are under treatment at hospitals accredited by the Single Health System. The activities carried out at this institution include the possibility, when one of the patients passes away, of a visit to the home of a relative who wants to talk about the experience of loss/mourning. This study aims to reflect about the experience of one of these visits, scheduled with the daughter of a cancer patient who passed away a short time ago. In principle, this care would be individual, as this was the only relative who manifested the desire to divide her mourning experience with the nurse. However, due to unexpected circumstances, this occasion involved the family group. One of the relevant aspects that emerged during the experience was the possibility to open a communication channel between the group, facilitating the attribution of a new meaning to the loss in this family and helping to construct a new level of configuration among its members.
