The aim of this study was to understand the senses produced on mental suffering by women in the treatment of depression. This is a qualitative study conducted with 10 female participants diagnosed with depression. The information was obtained through semi-structured interviews and analyzed according to the Discourse Analysis orientation from the perspective of Discursive Psychology. From the testimonies, three interpretive repertories were identified: 1) the disqualification and invisibility of the symptoms by the relatives; 2) the impact of depressive symptoms on the marital relationship; 3) drug therapy and religiosity as resources used to cope with depression. The interpretative analyzes showed that the daily experiences of these women produce meanings permeated by contradictions, ambiguities and stigmas about mental suffering. It is concluded that the woman with mental disorder still remains a silent victim of socially constructed conceptions that disqualify her existential and material conditions.
