Abstract

FERREIRA, Clarice Regina Catelan  and  FACCI, Marilda Gonçalves Dias. The practice of psychology in poverty contexts: Contributions by Martin Baró. Psicol. Am. Lat. [online]. 2020, n.33, pp.67-77. ISSN 1870-350X.

In this article, we present reflections on the history of psychology practice in the context of poverty in Brazil. We also present contributions from the suppositions of Ignácio Martin-Baró for practice in this context. We understand that this is an important discussion in the area of Psychology, which has not made much of an effort to approach the issue of poverty in the country. We have discussed how public policies have dictated the practice of psychologists in programs for poverty support. Also, we have discussed the formation and practice of psychologists as an influence of public policies. Based on historical, dialectic materialism, we propose that the practice of Psychology professionals should be supported by solid theoretical references and by a clear notion of the historical genesis of poverty and of the contradictions of capitalist society in order to operate with commitment to ethical and political psychology.
