This text, presented at the 2008 annual journey of the Círculo Psicanalítico do Rio Grande do Sul, aimed to propose a discussion about the origin of psychoanalysis and its intervention method: the talking cure. It was developed from a bibliographical review of the first cases of hysteria treated by Breuer and Freud. As the latter of which came to create the method called free association.
