Abstract

DAURE, Ivy  and  REVEYRAND-COULON, Odile. Cultural transmission between parents and their children: one of the keys for the immigration process. Psicol. clin. [online]. 2009, vol.21, n.2, pp.415-429. ISSN 0103-5665.

This paper presents partial results of a doctoral research on cultural transmission and the construction of identity of immigrants and their descendents. Nine families of Brazilian, Portuguese and Italian origin participated in this study, through individual and family meetings mediated by structured and semi-structured interviews, aiming to verify how parental culture of origin influences children's daily lifestyle in a foreign country and to analyze the impact of cultural transmission on the construction of identity among children of immigrants. Results show that children of immigrants appraise their "double-culture" situation as a value to preserve and integrate more easily to the country of immigration when the culture of origin is present in their day-to-day and parallel to that of the host country.

Keywords : transmission; parents; children; immigration; culture.
