In aging, the body undergoes several changes, including cognitive ones, which can interfere with the quality of life and the functionality of the individual’s actions. The general objective of this article is to clarify how psycho-pedagogy can contribute to maintaining or improving cognitive functions in the elderly – due to the possibility of cognitive decline in old age –, identifying strategies that can be used in clinical and educational activities. This scientific article is of an applied, descriptive-exploratory nature, characterized by a literature review with a qualitative approach. The descriptors “psycho-pedagogy” and “elderly” were used; “elderly” and “cognitive stimulation”, excluding materials that dealt with elderly people with cognitive impairment or dementia. Nine articles in Portuguese published in the period 2011-2021 that related psycho-pedagogical work with the elderly public were selected, using cognitive stimulation as a tool. All analyzed articles reinforce that the psycho-pedagogical performance with the elderly can be done as a preventive and remedial measure. Among the interventional strategies are several games; remembrance activities; image interpretation; digital inclusion; artistic activities in general; tests; associations; planning; ordering and logic; visuoconstruction activities; simultaneous cognitive and motor activities; change in everyday elements and activities. Benefits related: appreciation of the elderly, improvement of interpersonal relationships, creation of friendships, improvement of the quality of life, independence, autonomy, functionality, self-sufficiency, self-esteem, self-image, of the self, the perception of social problems, overcoming problems, breaking personal care, improving citizenship, improving the performance of activities of daily living, rescuing old dreams and life projects.
