LABATE, Julio Cesar Tadeu Chavasco. Selected fact and the possibility of recovery of the alpha function. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2011, vol.45, n.3, pp.77-84. ISSN 0486-641X.
With the help of recollection of music during the session, which works as a selected fact, associating the experience to other possible situations, the psychoanalytic pair can reach an emotional experience previously unachievable. This may show a possible recovery of the impaired alpha function. We used as an empiric example the case of Mister A, a patient in his sixties, regularly undergoing psychoanalysis for around one year, who presented anxiety problems, besides a constant feeling of being diseased. His symptoms and behavior are emptied of meaning, serving only as updates of emotional experiences not elaborated in consequence of the failure of his alpha function. Understanding such signs as the residues of the sensorial registry of emotional experience, together with the analytic work, allows for the progressive aid of the development of the pair, and for the patient to show signs of some recovery of the alpha function.
