The article celebrates the centenary of Group psychology and the analysis of the ego (1921). It presents the emergence in France, of the study of crowd behaviour at the end of the nineteenth century, and the transformative and critical view that Freud conferred to the topic, by highlighting the importance of the unconscious, libidinal ties, ideal instances and the identification, that from then onwards shaped mass and leader relationships. The article also discusses the Freudian mass psychology legacy and its importance for psychoanalysis and for transdisciplinary research on mass psychology and group studies throughout the twentieth century and early twenty-first 21st century.
