Assistance of caregivers in children self-care activities in an institutional care. Psicol. teor. prat. [online]. 2016, vol.18, n.3, pp.115-126. This study aimes at analyzing, from an ecological point of view, the levels of care provided by caregivers to children in self-care activities in residential care. Data were obtained from observation of the interaction between 10 caregivers and children aged 3 to 6 years during feeding activities, clothing and hygiene. After that the episodes were classified according to criteria inspired by Part II of the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory. The 57 episodes analyzed demonstrated the presence of behaviors that suggest high levels of child care by the educator in activities hygiene and clothing. Feeding activities were the ones that showed the lowest level of assistance. The results suggest that the levels observed are related to the institutional characteristics, besides the difficulty of activities, which may be interpreted as a facilitator or not for the development process.

Keywords : activities of daily living; residential care; caregivers; development; self care.
