HERNANDEZ, Aline and SCARPARO, Helena. Silences and knowledges saved in the images of the pre-coup d’etat of 1964. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2008, vol.8, n.15, pp.57-78. ISSN 2175-1390.
Although photographies are stronghy embedded in the media culture, there is a tendency to deal with the photographed themes before dealing with the photography itself as an informative element. It is important, therefore, to analize the narrative elements which are presented by the photography itself and its potential for recording reality as an interesting form of psychosocial research. We present a sequence of steps, coming from a synthesis of a number of scholars, related to the analysis of photographic images and an example of its applicability: the analysis of mass media images of Rio Grande do Sul related to the period before the coup d’etat of 1964. The classification and further analysis of a collection of photographies constitute an interesting working corpus to Psychology research, exploring those elements that are not seen in a superficial plan of the image: informative and narrative markers kept within their different plans. The photographic analysis serves both for obtaining relevant data about the studied object and as a source of hystorical documentation, because it rescues facts from the past to resignify them in the present time.
