The objective of this research was to determinate which tests could predict the success in the reading and writing learning process and the importance of preschool education in this process. Sixty-two children aged from 6 years and 2 months to 7 years and 10 months, of both sexes from two public schools in São Paulo City were studied. The sample was divided into two groups in which one group was of children who attended preschool and the other group of children who didn't attend preschool. At the beginning of the academic year, the Metropolitan Readiness Test, The Bender Perceptual-Motor Gestalt Test, the Piaget-Head Battery and Human Figure Drawing were applied. At the end of the year, the teachers assessed the school achievement.
