Abstract

SILVA, Aline Magalhães da; GALLEGO, Elaine da Trindade  and  TEIXEIRA, Maria Cristina Triguero Veloz. Intellectual skills of children with cancer and children who do not have the disease. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2006, vol.5, n.1, pp.33-41. ISSN 1677-0471.

The study aims at assessing, through the application of the WISC-III test, the intellectual performance of two different groups of children between 7 and 11 years old: a group of children with cancer that had pedagogical accompaniment and another group of children who do not have the disease and that go to school regularly. The main results pointed out that the abilities scoring average of the test of the group of children with cancer was higher than the scoring average of the group of children who do not have the disease. Even though there has been no assessment of the intellectual performance before the disease in the group of children with cancer, these results indicate that they have a satisfactory intellectual performance, if compared to the other children. And although the Wechsler Scales are intelligence measures, this initial study shows that this type of scale facilitates the identification of intellectual skills in children who are away from school, and indicates their mental functioning level to help guiding psychopedagogical works.

Keywords : Children's cancer; Scale of intelligence; Intellectual skills.
