Abstract
Realizing the imaginary: from Sartres conception of dreams to an existential clinic of dreaming. Psicol. rev. (Belo Horizonte) [online]. 2008, vol.14, n.1, pp.235-250. ISSN 1677-1168.
A limited bibliography concerning the phenomenon of dreams can be found in Brazil, based on a phenomenological-existential perspective. The dream is an element of utmost relevance to psychotherapy; so, a theoretical basis is necessary for the understanding of this phenomenon in the context of the individuals existence as a whole. This text aims to present Sartres conception of dreams, with basis on his book The Imaginary (1940). The way the author understands the oniric phenomenon as one of the imaginary manifestations contributes to the understanding of dreams in existential therapeutics. Seen as a phenomenon of imagination, the dream can be understood in the real world when it approaches the imaginative intention that composes its plot. Thus, the therapist tries to rescue the intention of imaginative consciousness in the act of producing the dream, and to unveil that intention as it brings meaningful subjects to the individuals existence as a whole.
