Abstract

Work is a social phenomenon and an essential part of the life of human beings, since it turns possible to them having status and connection to the society. The purpose of this study was to investigate opinions about work among young people from lower social classes. The data were obtained from 200 students from public high schools in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul. They answered a questionnaire that investigated their opinions about the world of work. The data was submitted to content analysis. Subsequently, response frequencies of categories were obtained. Results indicate that these students conceive work as a determinant aspect of their future. Work is perceived primarily as means to achieve financial independence.
