Abstract

MOTA, Márcia Elia da. Some considerations about literacy and metalinguistic development and their educational implications. Estud. pesqui. psicol. [online]. 2007, vol.7, n.3. ISSN 1808-4281.

Discussions about written language teaching practices have polarized the debate between those who defend a more direct teaching approach, focusing in letter-sound correspondence rules (decoding) and those who defend teaching that emphasizes contextual reading (literacy). The latter believe that teaching methods that focus in decoding turn reading in an uninteresting activity. Reading has been developed culturally and should not be dissociated from its uses and social functions. The present work critically review both theoretical points of view and proposes that literacy should be understood taking in account its cognitive, social and emotional aspects

Keywords : Literacy; Reading; Metalinguistic awareness.
