The passage from modernity to post-modernity still needs to be better understood and evaluated, especially for those who claim the need of a radical transformation of our societies, that is, the substitution of the capitalist mode of production. We believe it is possible to grasp this new historic context , namely, postmodernism, examining, in the work of Marcuse, the so called affirmative character of the culture and, after that, the situation of culture in post-modernity, from the point of view of the seminal contribution of Fredric Jameson. The question the guides our reflection has a double significance: does postmodernism represents, at the same time, the elimination of the affirmative character of the culture and the dissolution of the old dichotomy between culture and civilization?
