Abstract

VEIGA, Heila Magali da Silva; MACHADO, Sheila Francisca; PINHEIRO, Izabela Maria de Oliveira  and  REBOUCAS, Cínthia Regina Moura. Relations between proactive behavior and organizational commitment. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. [online]. 2013, vol.6, n.1, pp.127-143. ISSN 1983-8220.

Proactive behavior is related to actions that will benefit the organization and anticipate future problems; therefore it is highly gauged in the current labor market. Among the antecedents of this variable is the impact of organizational commitment which is one of little investigated and with contradictory results. In order to address this research gap, the overall purpose of the present study is to identify the influence of organizational commitment (affective, calculative and normative) on proactive behavior. To conduct the study a non-probability sample of 457 workers from twenty-two public and private organizations was selected. Psychometrically validated scales were used to measure each variable. The results show that workers presented pro-activity above the midpoint of the range (3.31, SD = 0.88). An analysis of the standard multiple regression showed that the three antecedent variables explained 16% of the criterion variable, proactive behavior. The results are discussed based on literature from the area
