Abstract

MARCON, Gilberto Hoffmann. From individualism to individuation: the ethics of authenticity from the Gestalt approach. Rev. NUFEN [online]. 2018, vol.10, n.1, pp.235-255. ISSN 2175-2591.  https://doi.org/10.26823/RevistadoNUFEN.vol10(1).n04ensaio35.

Our purpose in this paper is to do a theoretical research about the specific issues relative to the way of being in contemporaneity that can be described as individualism. From the point of view of Gestalt-therapy, we attempt to follow Charles Taylor's descriptive research of what he calls a contemporaneous malaise, which takes the form of a narrowing of lived senses that have as counterpart an emergence and generalized predominance of insufficient forms of intersubjective relations and of selfcare itself. According to the philosopher, or contemporary individualism has its roots in a distorted ideal of authenticity. We try to analyze in what way the excessive valorization of self-centered and instrumentalized processes of choice described by the author can act as blockers of contact, as well as point out, from the Gestalt Approach perspective, possibilities of overcoming this model towards an integrative notion of authenticity: non-individualistic, concrete and fostering creative adjustment.

Keywords : Authenticity; Individualism; Contemporaneity; Gestalt-therapy; Ethics.
