A qualitative study of the case study type, in order to assess the coping strategies adopted by families of individuals undergoing cancer treatment. The participants were ten family members of patients treated at the Hospital of oncology service Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in Tubarão city, Santa Catarina states, Brazil. The results revealed which, in most cases, living together has been a difficult and painful experience. Regarding coping strategies, the study showed that seek to carry out activities to avoid focusing on disease; use legal drugs and seek family or religious support. In this way, it highlights the need for health professionals provide support to family members, as they become weakened by the changes triggered in the disease process.
