INTRODUCTION: There are several researches on reading and writing skills and their difficulties, and the Battery for the Assessment of Reading and Writing (BALE) has proven an effective tool to identify these difficulties. However, there are few studies on bilingualism and language comparisons, as the processes of acquisition and fluency in Portuguese and Hebrew. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to assess the adequacy of the Hebrew version of BALE, through evidence of the validity on the basis of grades and the correlation between Portuguese and Hebrew versions. METHODS: The two versions of the tests were applied to 51 children of elementary school in a bilingual school, with an average age of 8.6 years (SD=1.03). RESULTS: The results showed that scores in Portuguese was significantly higher than in the Hebrew version, for the three tests. Increase in the test scores along the series was observed and also a positive correlations between the two versions of the test. CONCLUSION: This work shows a standard relational processing of two languages despite their variability.
