Abstract

MINERBO, Marion. Boredom, and the feeling of emptiness in the clinical practice. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2017, vol.51, n.3, pp.53-63. ISSN 0486-641X.

In this paper, the author deals with the relation between boredom, the feeling of emptiness in the clinical practice, and the fragility of institutions in the contemporary world. The author distinguishes that emotional experience from depression and the mere dissatisfaction with life. In metapsychological terms, boredom corresponds to what Green have called white anxiety, which is typical of this feeling of emptiness (“clinical emptiness”). A clinical vignette illustrates this form of psychic suffering and may suggest some ways to manage it.

Keywords : boredom; pathologies of emptiness; white anxiety; symbolic depletion; postmodernity.
