Abstract

BIDARRA, Jorge. The world knowledge and experiences of the speaker in Natural Language Processing: polysemy in focus. Ciênc. cogn. [online]. 2012, vol.17, n.1, pp.166-177. ISSN 1806-5821.

The amount of polysemic words in Portuguese is quite significant. Although the phenomenon, at least apparently, does not impose difficulties for speakers, it does not apply for the researchers who focus on the subject. Despite of many advances made by research, we already know that the problem only discussed under a grammatical point of view is not enough. Studies show that to solve the dilemmas posed by polysemy theoretical we need considering not only the grammatical aspects, but also the knowledge of world and life experiences of the speakers. For the present discussion, we review some theoretical approaches that seek a solution to the problem at hand. And a little more, I provide some illustrative examples in order to helping us to understand the phenomenon, as well as the dilemmas that arise. Throughout the text, I try to draw the reader's attention to the different strategies that tend to take action when one is faced with the need for polysemy and disambiguation. © Cien.
