Abstract

The articles aim was to assess the alcohol use pattern among Primary Health Care (PHC) patients and to investigate the impact of sociodemographic variables on that usage pattern. Data were collected through a structured interview and application of the AUDIT. The sample comprises 371 patients between 18 and 85 yes old. As for the sample distribution in the AUDIT classification, 52.8% were abstemious; 29.1% were low risk users; 12.7% at-risk drinkers; 1.1% harmful drinkers and 4.3% were likely dependent. The alcohol use pattern is mainly related to religion and other sociodemographic variables. This article can be useful to elaborate public policies and preventive health practices.
