Abstract

MOREIRA, Jacqueline de Oliveira et al. Desire and guilt: The diabolical temptation in Eça de Queiroz. Arq. bras. psicol. [online]. 2021, vol.73, n.3, pp.97-111. ISSN 1809-5267.  https://doi.org/10.36482/1809-5267.arbp2021v73i3p.97-111.

The present article intends to identify elements in Eça de Queiroz's O mandarim (1880/1963) that could offer working clues for the comprehension of some of the concepts in the Freudian and Lacanian theories. Taking in consideration that the association between the unconscious desire and the diabolical seduction is sustained throughout Freud's work, we examine, drawing from the theme of the pact with the devil, explored by Queiroz, the clinical and theoretical implications concerning three concepts, in particular. They are, namely: the question of the narcissistic movements that mark the subject within the dialectical pair dissatisfaction/search for realization; the concept of jouissance as something inscribed beyond the pleasure principle; and the dimension of guilt, that is realized through masochism, in the face of the non-assumption, by the subject, of the responsibility concerning his desire, which locates the main character in the novel in the field of the moral masochism.

Keywords : Psychoanalysis; Devil; Guilt; Desire; Eça de Queiroz.
