Abstract

MARTONE, Maria Carolina Correa  and  BANACO, Roberto Alves. Schizophrenia: Experimental animal models and strategies of applied behavior analysis. Perspectivas [online]. 2011, vol.2, n.2, pp.150-158. ISSN 2177-3548.

This article presents a behavioral-analytic view about schizophrenia and comprises two parts: (a) presents previous work on animal behavioral experimental models related to schizophrenic behaviors (i.e., social isolation, latent inhibition and learned helplessness) and (b) applied interventions (e.g., the token economy and functional analytic approaches). The results indicate that schizophrenia continue requiring different approaches to the study. We believe that better understanding of biobehavioral characteristics, as well as the continued pursuit of applied strategies, of which we highlight the functional analytical model, will be key factors for the return of behavior analysis to investigate this phenomenon systematically, in both laboratory and social contexts.

Keywords : schizophrenia; functional analysis; animal models; token economy.
