Abstract

MARCOS, Cristina Moreira  and  JUNIOR, Ednei Soares de Oliveira. Therapeutics and the desire to know: the young Freud and his medical training. Estud. psicanal. [online]. 2011, n.36, pp.43-54. ISSN 0100-3437.

Freud´s particular positioning in his medical university background highlights a tension between research and therapeutical elements’. These elements are fundamental when coming to the birth of psychoanalysis. Since Freud´s university education, his desire to know products great consequences to the development of psychoanalytic theory and practice that goes beyond its therapeutic purposes. On the other hand, Freud never ignored the fact that psychoanalysis is a method of treatment and owed its development to the contact with patients. Among university education, scientific research and treatment method, Freud´s desire confirms a tension that marks the uniqueness of psychoanalysis as a practice.
