Abstract

FREITAS, Élvio Pereira Cotrim de. A season at Hades: an epic stroll through the divine hiatus. Ide (São Paulo) [online]. 2021, vol.43, n.71, pp.63-69. ISSN 0101-3106.

The Homeric epic sings Odysseus' return home, his wandering and learning throughout this journey. In Book XI of the Odyssey, the hero goes to Hades, a space invisible to gods and men. Nekyia is the name given to the encounter between the living and the dead. Hades is the area of interest worked on here. This article therefore proposes a dialogue between Walter Benjamin's argument in "The storyteller" (1936), and the study by Hellenist George Alexander Gazis, Homer and the poetics of Hades (2018), about Odysseus' most radical journey.

Keywords : Homer; Odyssey; Hades; Nekyia.
