Abstract

CHREIM, Vanessa. For an update of the concept of castration. J. psicanal. [online]. 2022, vol.55, n.103, pp.91-105.  Epub July 08, 2024. ISSN 0103-5835.  https://doi.org/10.5935/0103-5835.v55n103.07.

This paper proposes a reformulation of the concept of castration, articulating it with the concept of limit formulated by Green - as a field of connection and transformation, and not just separation. Based on the contributions of Clavreul and Aulagnier-Spairani, we revisit Freud’s work questioning what it means to admit castration and under which circumstances it becomes inadmissible. There are several façades of castration, and they concern every form of threat to narcissism, such as incompleteness, otherness, lovelessness, helplessness and finitude. Finally, this article reflects on the notions of paternal function and maternal function, in the light of contemporary psychoanalysis, in order to think about the psychic suffering that we currently face in the clinic and in cultural phenomena.

Keywords : castration; disavowal; limit; narcissism; contemporary psychoanalysis.
