Learning is a process consisting of socioemotional and cognitive aspects that promotes distinct benefits to individuals on a biopsychosocial basis. Focusing on the motivational issues involved in learning, it is important to consider the intrinsic specificities at the individual and collective levels. Given this scenario, the present study aimed to compile scientific data regarding the motivation to learn in different contexts. The present study consisted of a narrative review with capture of scientific materials by means of search platforms such as SciELO and PubMed. The findings indicate motivation to learn as one of the problems in the educational context, whether formal or informal, and, in the formal context, attention is drawn to the difference between motivation related to obtaining prizes and rewards and motivation to learn. It is also approached that affective bonds are influential in motivational processes in learning, as well as that the specific demands of each stage of development should be considered, pairing the different learning modalities. It was concluded that motivation is linked to the learning process, interconnected with performance, and with the positive attitudes of individuals. Furthermore, the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic issues of the individual should also be considered in the understanding of motivation in different contexts, as well as in the adoption of more effective strategies in the promotion of teaching-learning.
