This article proposes the use of chess pieces in psychodrama as an intermediary object, approaching its potentialities and limitations. The technique has been useful in identifying interpersonal conflicts in different psychotherapeutic approaches. We propose an articulation of chess as a psychodramatic and sociometric instrument and the contributions of Moreno, exploring its use as: 1) warming-up to elicit emotions and identify conflicts; 2) instrument of diagnosis of the social atom; and 3) tool to perform sociometric test. A protocol for the application of chess in the construction of the social atom in individual care is presented to assist the therapist in the use of this resource. It is concluded that the psychotherapeutic use of chess pieces requires psychodramatist's creativity and spontaneity.
