The purpose of this paper is to accomplish an interdisciplinary study relating parental power and filicide expressed in the various modes of abandoning and violence. Some aspects of the history of infancy in Brazil are discussed to exemplify the theme. The authors stress how the psychoanalytical approach can be a way to examine, through the study of the primitive emotional development in the parent-children interactions the origins and understanding of many aspects of violence, mainly with children. They discuss some philosophical concepts that relate knowledge and power in order to enlarge the understanding of this complex issue. On the other hand, they stress the importance of cultural, social and political factors influenced by law and ethics, that change according to historical periods. The authors conclude by saying that the knowledge derived from psychoanalysis, applied to community, public health or informed through media, can contribute in a prophylactic way to improve childhood protection.
