Case-control study by means of data bank linkage from the Mortality Information System (SIM, 2008-11) and the Information System on Births (SINASC) to identify risk factors for infant mortality in Palmas/TO. All children who died before one year of age (cases) were selected. Controls were the three children born subsequently of each case, who did not die during the first year. Data were evaluated by logistic regression according to a hierarchic model of infant mortality determination.139 cases and 417 controls participated in the study. Infant mortality rate was 11,0‰ and presented as predictors birth weight of 450-1999g (OR=20,81; IC95%:4,32-100,23) and 2000-2499g (OR=5,53; IC95%:2,20-13,92), Apgar at 5 minutes (OR=15,02; IC95%:5,75-39,25), infant race (OR=3,14; IC95%:1,66-5,95) and presence of previous gestations (OR=32,08; IC95%:1,10-3,92). Results emphasize birth conditions as the more related factors to the studied outcome.
