Abstract
CARVALHO, Lúcia de Fátima and DIMENSTEIN, Magda. The woman, her physician and the psychotropic drug: a web of inaterfaces and subjectivity production in public health services. Interações [online]. 2003, vol.8, n.15, pp.37-64. ISSN 1413-2907.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the meaning of and the function attributed to anxiolytic drugs by women users and medical general practitioners. It examines the relationship established between the woman, the physician that prescribes the drug, and the drug itself, in order to understand the construction of this relationship within the public health context. The study was conducted with sixteen women that were anxiolytic users and eight physicians that worked in different public health units of the city of Natal/RN. A semi-structured interview was conducted with the women to obtain information about: a) the reasons for using anxiolytic drugs; b) their expectations as a user, and c) the treatment as a solution to their problems. The interview with the health professionals focused on their view of the drug and the user, and included questions regarding user complaints, the proposed treatment, drug effectiveness, use of other treatment resources, and the dynamics of the physician-woman relationship.
