In order to consider the deadlocks faced by psychoanalysis, this article discusses the concept of symptom as it appears in some elaborations of Freud and Lacan. The work concentrates especially on Lacan's concept of object a, since its elaboration allows us to evaluate the difficulties found in the persistence of the symptom during the work of analysis.
