Abstract

SEQUEIRA, Vânia Conselheiro. Resilience and shelters. Bol. - Acad. Paul. Psicol. [online]. 2009, vol.29, n.1, pp.65-80. ISSN 1415-711X.

This article aims to discuss the concept of resilience, to its use in shelters for children and adolescents. We have information that some people emerge strengthened from the traumatic events while others succumb. Putting this idea in scientific terms, resilience is the ability of the human being to develop skills to overcome situations that are adverse or in face of traumatic events. This position is based on studies of Boris Cyrulnik, which marked a new conceptual direction based on the results of his experiment. He is far from the concept of resilience as an intrinsic attribute existing in certain people, as something inherent in the personality that is expressed naturally, without taking into account the learning. Priorities are given to shelters for children and adolescents as an adverse environment toward the context of a family considered as normal. In this sense, the work follows a new direction for analyzing the shelters under the point of view of ECA, which recommends an affective treatment with assistance to the daily routine of those living in shelters. In these institutions, promoters and adverse factors in the development of resilience are analysed. Interviews conducted with teachers and observations of the environment are the tools used for collection and interpretation of data with respect to this concept in this environment. To conclude, the importance of improving this context is considered, starting with the training of educators and their valuation as indispensable agents to offer opportunities for the promotion of resilience in these institutions.
