Abstract

NEVES, Beatriz de Sousa; FREITAS, Marta Helena de; SANTOS, Luciana da Silva  and  NETO, Félix. Domestic violence and religiosity in the experience of immigrant Brazilian women: perceptions of the psychologist of a Brazilian General Consulate in Portugal. Bol. - Acad. Paul. Psicol. [online]. 2019, vol.39, n.96, pp.11-24. ISSN 1415-711X.

Currently, many Brazilian women living in Portugal are victims of violence. In this context, among other factors, religiosity may be a resource to deal with these experiences, particularly in cases of domestic violence. Considering that Psychologists from General Consulates may receive such demands, the main objective of this study was to investigate the perceptions of a psychologist of a Brazilian Consulate in Portugal about the experiences of Brazilian immigrant women in that country, as well as their perceptions about the role of religiosity in these experiences, especially in relation to domestic violence. The study consisted of a qualitative research with exploratory scope. The analysis of the description, obtained through a semi-structured interview, occurred according to the Amedeo Giorgi's empirical-phenomenological method. According to the psychologist, the domestic violence suffered by these women constitutes the greatest demand in her psychotherapeutic work with patients referred by the Consulate. In her view, although religiosity has a relevant role in the immigrant's mental health, it may also have a negative influence on the way these women deal with the violence in question. These findings point to the importance that both domestic violence and religiosity, under the gender bias, should be thematics inserted in debates and studies about the migratory process.
