AZEVEDO, Bruna Rafaela Magalhães de; PINHEIRO, Débora Nemer  and  JOAQUIM, Maria Joana Mader. Cardiovascular diseases: cardiovascular risk factors and cognition. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2017, vol.20, n.2, pp.25-44. ISSN 1516-0858.

Cardiovascular diseases or cardiovascular risk factors may predispose to cerebrovascular diseases and, consequently, cognitive decline, for sharing the same pathophysiology. The present study aimed to identify, describe and analyze scientific articles that correlate cardiovascular diseases and cardiovascular risk factors with cognitive functioning. To this end, 16 articles were chosen by relevance of content and they were discussed from the analysis of thematic content, in which three categories were created: cardiovascular disease and cognition, cardiovascular risk and cognition, and finally, cardiovascular health and cognition. The articles demonstrated that there is cognitive impairment as a result of both cardiovascular diseases as cardiovascular risk factors, while indexes of cardiovascular health have contributed to better cognitive performance.

Keywords : cognition; cardiopathy; risk factors; neuropsychology.
