The scientific literature indicates an apparent difficulty in understanding of the multidisciplinary hospital care team about the actions performed by the hospital psychologist. The present study aimed to characterize frequency, stratification by professional modality and analyze the content of consultation requests, made by the multiprofessional team, destined to the psychology service of a SUS hospital, reference to the health of the elderly. This was an exploratory, qualitative and quantitative study, which was carried out in a documentary and retrospective manner through the analysis of medical records of patients who had consultation requests for the psychology team. Through quantitative data analysis, it was possible to identify the participation of professional categories in the preparation of the requests. In the qualitative portion, carried out by the Bardin Content Analysis method, seven categories were found: identification; palliative care; losses; patient; adherence to treatment; family member/companion; and conduct of psychology. In the final considerations, it was observed that the multiprofessional team adequately recognizes the reasons for requesting an assessment from the psychology team, but is not able to specify what are the actions performed by the hospital psychologist, requesting the specialty to act on the illness, without considering the subjective aspects associated.
