This study aimed to identify the views of psychologists about the experience of illness in men with cancer. From the perspective of qualitative research and references of Gender Theories, interviewed 13 psychologists who work in specialized oncology in Belo Horizonte‑MG. The results point to the implications of the socialization process and construction of masculine identity in the illness experience of cancer, reflecting difficulties in mobilization and adherence to cancer treatment. Emphasizing the biological dimension, the psychic structure and socio‑cultural aspects as constituents of these singularities, the interviewees indicate the determinism and culpabilisation these subjects, ignoring organizational and institutional aspects that contribute to this scenario. There is a need to build spaces that to critical reflective discussion about the specifics of gender in health services from the perspective of universality, fairness and integrity.
