Abstract

LIMA, MARCUS EUGÊNIO OLIVEIRA  and  BEZERRA, CHARLES VINICIUS SOUZA. Voting and repentance in the 2018 Brazilian presidential elections. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2023, vol.23, n.58, pp.519-535.  Epub July 08, 2024. ISSN 2175-1390.

With the aim of analyzing Brazilian voter’s feelings of regret and justifications for their votes in the 2018 presidential election, 376 electronic questionnaires were administered between 04/30/21 and 05/17/2021. The results indicated a low of regret. Lexical analyzes showed that justifications for non-repentance structured a class of “disappointed” responses (30% of Jair Bolsonaro’s voters), who, although disappointed with the government, do not regret their vote. An analysis of the explanatory variables for “non-repentance” indicated the importance religious identification; moral conservatism; Far-Right positioning in the political spectrum; the belief in a communist threat; the belief that a military regime is not a threat and mainly due to distrust in the Supreme Federal Court. It is concluded that the psychology of repentance can help strengthen knowledge of the factors necessary to improve democracy in Brazil.
