JORGE, Márcia de Mendonça. Losses and gains in the aging of women. Psicol. rev. (Belo Horizonte) [online]. 2005, vol.11, n.17, pp.47-61. ISSN 1677-1168.

This article is a report of the research ‘Losses and gains in the aging of women’, where we tried to learn middle-age women’s life pathways, in order to understand how they live and deal with aging. We analyzed the pathways and identities of ten women between 50 and 60 years of age of the urban population of Belo Horizonte, with the following characteristics: married women, single women and widows, with or without children, working and not working, with a senior high-school level and higher education degree. We tried to understand the ways they deal with the loss of the commonest identifying references to women &–maternity and the other’s object of desire. Investigation was carried out about other references they find for themselves, and about their fulfillments in maturity.

Keywords : Woman; Aging; Identifying references; Maternity; The other’s object of desire.
