Abstract

ZACK, Oscar. Symptom and character. Psicol. rev. (Belo Horizonte) [online]. 2012, vol.18, n.1, pp.1-14. ISSN 1677-1168.  https://doi.org/10.5752/P.1678-9563.2012v18n1p1.

This article begins with the hypothesis that symptom and character are two forms of drive satisfaction instinct that can become confused during the phsycoanalytic treatment. It offers a conceptual journey which aims to elucidate the intertwining, the similarities and differences between symptom and character. This paper takes two references from Freud ("Character and Anal Eroticism" and "Some types of character, elucidated by the analytic work"), and some lectures from Lacan. Thus, the author states that symptom and character follow different logics. Finally the paper concludes with the lacanian concept of "sinthome", which raises a clinical solution for the paradoxes and impasses caused by these two forms of instinctual satisfaction
