The goal of this study was to evaluate the incidence of stress in hospitalized patients in a general private hospital. Forty patients took part in this study. A socio-demographic questionnaire and the Lipp's Inventory of Stress Symptoms in Adults were used. It was observed that 82,5% of the participants were stressed, given that 62,5% of them were in the resistance phase, 7,5% in the alert phase, 7,5% in the near-exhaustion phase and 5% in the exhaustion phase, with predominance of psychological symptoms (69,2%). The research found 40% of stressed women and 42,5% of men. The results showed high levels of stress for both men and women, and also that the number of days in the hospital and the pathology degree did not determine the development of stress. It is suggested that similar researches with a larger number of participants should be carried out, as well as the need to consider different forms of intervention in the hospital
