This article presents an analysis of the evolution of the concept of career and its various meanings and the results of comparative and longitudinal case studies carried out with professionals from the administration area, to investigate their self-perceptions and career aspirations (anchors). Twelve interviews were conducted in which the Edgar Scheins Inventory of Career Anchors was applied. The same process was repeated two years later. The Lifestyle anchor was the most frequently found in both applications, thus reflecting the importance attributed to a balance between family life and work. It was observed that the main anchors identified tended to remain unchanged. However, in some cases, the positions reversed: secondary anchors became forefront. In others, it was possible to observe a reconfiguration of anchors, which is associated to career transitions. Also the career paths of those surveyed was observerd to became, along time, more adherent to a more modern career model, that is, the protean career model.
